giver of all human talent, God who wills that chaos end:

grant us now creative spirits, minds responsive to your mind,

hearts and wills your rule extending, all our acts by love refined.

The Proclamation of the Word

A Reading from the prophet, Jeremiah (31.27–34)

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. In those days they shall no longer say: ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge.

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Psalm 119.97–104 Refrain: Grant me understanding, that I may live.

Oh, how I love your law! All the day long it is in my mind. Your commandment has made me wiser than my enemies, and it is always with me. Grant me understanding, that I may live.

I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my study. I am wiser than the elders, because I observe your commandments.

Grant me understanding, that I may live.

I restrain my feet from every evil way, that I may keep your word. I do not shrink from your judgements, because you yourself have taught me.

Grant me understanding, that I may live.

How sweet are your words to my taste! They are sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through your commandments I gain understanding; therefore I hate every lying way.

Grant me understanding, that I may live.

A Reading from the second letter of Paul to Timothy(3.14—4.5)

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

Gradual Hymn: Spirit of Gentleness

Refrain: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free, Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, Wind, Wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,

then you coaxed up the mountains from the valley of sleep;

and over the eons you called to each thing:

wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings. Refrain

You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand, and you goaded your people with a law and a land; and when they were blinded with their idols and lies, then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes. Refrain

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill, then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still; and down in the city you called once again, when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind. Refrain

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes, from the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams; our women see visions, our men clear their eyes. with bold new decisions your people arise. Refrain

The Lord be with you And also with you

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (18.1–8)

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, ‘In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, “Grant me justice against my opponent.” For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, “Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.”’ And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?’

The Gospel of Christ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Homily

Affirmation of Faith (Copyright Lisa Frenz)

We believe in God the Creator,

who created and is creating everything:

the universe, the world, the plants and animals, and us;

each of us, unique, individual and beloved of God.

We believe in God the Christ,

who saved and is saving everything:

the universe, the world, the plants and animals, and us:

each of us; unique, individual and beloved of the Christ.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,

who guided and is guiding everything:

the universe, the world, the plants and animals, and us;

each of us, unique, individual and beloved of the Spirit.

We believe that this one God in three persons,

is present among us, working directly in our lives

and the lives of all who are born into this world,

striving to bring us back into harmony with all creation and with God:

forgiving, healing, touching everyone,

never rejecting any who willingly receive

this freely offered gift of love and grace and eternal life. Amen

Prayer of Confession

Create peace within us, around us and through us, O God.

When indifference rules, when friends surprise, when situations test us, be our source of peace, O God.

Words of Assurance

Peace does not come effortlessly. It requires openness to new insights, death to old hostilities and the willingness to accept a new way.

We are ready to take up the challenge and accept a new vision.

Peace is God’s graceful gift to you

Thanks be to God. Amen

The Peace

Offertory Hymn: Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord, and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, only light, and where there’s sadness ever joy.

O Spirit, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled, as to console, to be understood, as to understand, to be loved as to love, with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving to all that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life. O Spirit, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled, as to console, to be understood, as to understand, to be loved as to love, with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord, and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

Prayer over the Gifts

Eternal God, your word inspires our faith. May we who offer you our praise trust you in all things. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer (Anglican Eucharistic Liturgies p. 46)

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself.

When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son.

You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us.

He opened his arms of love on the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends

he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.”

Loving God, we do this in remembrance of Jesus, his body is the bread of life.

At the end of the supper, taking the cup of wine

he gave you thanks, and said:

“Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me.”

Loving God, we do this in remembrance of Jesus; his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,

send you Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine

may be to us the body and the blood of your dear son.

As we eat and drink these holy gifts, make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

With your whole church throughout the world

we offer you this sacrifice of praise

and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and Earth of your glory are full Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest

Blessed is one who comes in the name of the Lord

Blessed is one who comes in the name of the Lord

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might

Heaven and Earth of your glory are full Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest.

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation;

through your goodness we have this bread to offer,

which the earth has given and human hands have made.

It will become for us the bread of life.

Blessed be God forever

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation;

through your goodness we have this wine to offer,

fruit of the vine and work of human hands.

It will become for us the cup of salvation.

Blessed be God forever

As the grain once scattered in the fields

and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside

are now reunited on this table in bread and wine,

so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together

from the corners of the earth into your kingdom. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer (music: Doug Cameron c. 2000)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our sins.

As we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory are yours.

Now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us;

nourish your people with the word of life and the bread of heaven.

With this bread that we bring,

we shall remember Jesus.

With this wine that we bring,

we shall remember Jesus

Bread for his body, wine for his blood, gifts from God to the table we bring.

We shall remember Jesus.

The Communion

Hymns during Distribution:

573 CP O Day of Peace

O day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes and prayers and dreams, guide us to justice, truth and love, delivered from our selfish schemes. May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from envy find release, till by God’s grace our warring world shall see Christ’s promised reign of peace. Then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb, nor shall the fierce devour the small; as beasts and cattle calmly graze, a little child shall lead them all. Then enemies shall learn to love, all creatures find their true accord; the hope of peace shall be fulfilled, for all the earth shall know the Lord.

God of the Bible

God of the Bible, God in the Gospel,

hope seen in Jesus, hope yet to come,

you are our centre, daylight or darkness,

freedom or prison, you are our home.

REFRAIN:

Fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise,

God always faithful, you do not change.

Fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise,

God always faithful, you do not change.

God in our struggles, God in our hunger,

suffering with us, taking our part,

still you empower us, mothering Spirit,

feeding, sustaining, from your own heart. REFRAIN

Those without status, those who are nothing,

you have made royal, gifted with rights,

chosen as partners, midwives of justice,

birthing new systems, lighting new lights. REFRAIN

Not by your finger, not by your anger

will our world order change in a day,

but by your people, fearless and faithful,

small paper lanterns, lighting the way. REFRAIN

Hope we must carry, shining and certain

through all our turmoil, terror and loss,

bonding us gladly one to the other,

till our world changes facing the Cross. REFRAIN

Prayer after Communion

God of peace, you have nourished us in this sacrament with the body and blood of Christ. May we who have taken holy things keep faith in our hearts and lives, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Glory to God,

whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from

generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.
