Gathering Hymn: 430 CP Will You Come and Follow Me

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don't know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known? Will you let my life be grown in you, and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare, should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen? And admit to what I mean in you, and you in me?

Will you love the "you" you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell that fear inside and never be the same?

Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around through my sight and touch and sound in you, and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I'll go, where your love and footsteps show, thus I'll move and live and grow in you, and you in me.

Children’s Ministry time

A Reading from the prophet, Joel (2.23-32)

O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing-floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you.

You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

Then afterwards I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Listen for the leading of the Spirit. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 65 Refrain: Be joyful in God, all the earth.

You are to be praised, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem. To you that hear prayer shall all flesh come. Our sins are stronger than we are, but you will blot out our transgressions.

Be joyful in God, all the earth.

Happy are they whom you choose and draw to your courts to dwell there! They will be satisfied by the beauty of your house, by the holiness of your temple. Awesome things will you show us in your righteousness, O God of our salvation, O Hope of all the ends of the earth and of the seas that are far away. You make fast the mountains by your power; they are girded about with might. You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the clamour of the peoples. Be joyful in God, all the earth.

Those who dwell at the ends of the earth will tremble at your marvellous signs; you make the dawn and the dusk to sing for joy. You visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very plenteous; the river of God is full of water. You prepare the grain, for so you provide for the earth. You drench the furrows and smooth out the ridges; with heavy rain you soften the ground and bless its increase. You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. May the fields of the wilderness be rich for grazing, and the hills be clothed with joy. May the meadows cover themselves with flocks, and the valleys cloak themselves with grain; let them shout for joy and sing. Be joyful in God, all the earth.

A Reading from the second letter of Paul to Timothy(4.6-8, 16-18)

As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Listen for the leading of the Spirit. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Sisters Let Us Walk Together

Sisters let us walk together,

sharing sadness, loss and grief,

we will move through pain to wholeness,

brokenness transformed to peace.

Brothers let us work together,

seeking justice, healing shame,

filled with hope, embued with courage,

ev’ry violence we will name.

People let us love together,

joining spirits, linking hands,

we are God’s unique creation,

clothed with dignity we’ll stand.

The Lord be with you And also with you

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 18.9-14

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’

The Gospel of Christ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

The Peace

The Peace of the Lord be always with you

And also with you

The Offertory Hymn: 500 CP Sister, Let Me Be Your Servant

Sister, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey, fellow travellers on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow till we’ve seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven, we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony. Brother, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

The Prayer over the Gifts (Prayers to Share)

Gifts without measure you have given to us, O God. We rejoice that we are able to return gifts for your work. May these gifts be humbly shared, with the distressed, as they come to know peace; with the bereaved as they sense a comforting presence; with the powerless as they find a way to be in control; with the challenged, as their special gifts are affirmed. As these gifts go to work, your presence is felt! Thanks be to you, O God! Amen

Eucharistic Prayer (Anglican Eucharistic Liturgies pg. 304)

God is here

We praise God together

Let us say thank you to God

Who has done so much for us

God, you made us, and the world and everything in it.

All the good we see comes from you.

You have always loved us but people have not always loved you.

You sent Jesus to show us how to live and to bring us back to you again.

Amen. We are alive in Jesus

Jesus died for us on the cross so that through your Spirit we can all be your people.

And so with thanks we praise you singing

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and Earth of your glory are full Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest. Blessed is one who comes in the name of the Lord

Blessed is one who comes in the name of the Lord

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and Earth of your glory are full

Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the Highest.

We are here because on the night before he died Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

There he took some bread and gave thanks to you, God.

He broke it into pieces, and gave it to them.

“This is my body”, he said. “Do this and know that I am with you.”

Amen. We are alive in Jesus

Later Jesus took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you.

Jesus shared it with them, and said “This is my blood, which brings new life.

Do this and know that I am with you.”

Amen. We are alive in Jesus

And so, remembering Jesus, who died, was raised to new life by you,

and is alive forever, we are glad to share that life and live in him.

Amen. We are alive in Jesus

Send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and wine

can be for us the body and blood of Jesus,

and through this food give us strength to live as your people.

Amen. We are alive in Jesus

Help us to care for your world and for each other in the way that Jesus showed us.

Until he comes again with all your people in every time and every land, we worship you and say:

We praise you. We thank you. We bless you. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer (Cameron)

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ

We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread

Communion Music: 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Refrain

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul,

I’ll worship Your holy name.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning; it’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes. Refrain

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your Name is great and Your heart is kind; For all Your goodness I will keep on singing, ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. Refrain

And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come; still my soul sings Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore. Refrain

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I’ll worship Your holy name,

worship Your holy name,

worship Your holy name.

Prayer after Communion

All your works praise you, O Lord.

And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing

Closing Hymn: A Vision Strong

The people will perish without a vision strong.

And the victims of oppression call to us to sing their song.

We can sing it together if we’re standing side by side.

Sharing joys and sorrows like the flowing of the tide.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

And the plunder of the earth cannot go on for very long.

Development means more than building towers to the sky

and living well means more than just deciding what to buy.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

So when women take the lead, you know, the men must tag along.

‘Cause women want equality and power in their own lives

and men must stop and listen if the earth is to survive.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

Work to build up what is right and tear down what is wrong.

The young must see their visions and the old must dream their dreams

of a time when justice rolls down as an ever flowing stream.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

The people will perish without a vision strong.

Dismissal

Let us embrace the wonder of this week with expectation and imagination...

God of wonder, send us out with hearts full of praise. God of wilderness, send us out with lives full of courage. God of the rainbow covenant,

send us out to live at one with all people. God of the cross and resurrection, send us out in joyful service. Amen. Alleluia
